Kontor

Overview / Problem

Kontor, a visual search and discovery platform, aggregates professional interior design images from top design firms for designers from around the world to build visual inspiration and mood boards for interior design projects. An issue that designers were having with Google image search and Pinterest was that they would find images of interiors that had products in them that they would want to spec for a project but there wasn’t any way to find out what the product was, who makes it, and how much it costs.

We created Kontor to be able to solve the aforementioned problem of not knowing what these products were in the inspiration images that interior designers were collecting. When we first built the platform we only gave a few details about the product. However, our users wanted to know more details, such as product specs, where to buy it, where they could locate design files. Our challenge was to take the basic information that we had and create full product pages using the product metadata provided by our product manufacturing partners.

Key Issues

  1. Users want to know more detail about the furniture products

  2. Users want to know what skews the furniture product comes in and its various configurations

  3. Users want to be able to find and access files relevant to the product they want to purchase

  4. Users want to be able to know where to buy a product and who to contact

Solution and Key Takeaways

To satisfy user needs, I created a product detail page that encompassed information beyond what you would find on a regular ecommerce website.

  1. Users were be able to view every sku, color and configuration of that product, as well as all of the images associated with that sku, color and configuration. This was one of the most challenging parts about this PDP. We had to have a flexible page that would allow users to switch between configuration as well as images within that configuration so I designed an image switcher on the left side and a separate sku switcher below so that designers could find the right product.

  2. By adding buttons to contact dealer (the dealer information we had already from our dealer partners) we would expose the information that a designer needed to contact a dealer in their area to find out more about the product (since furniture product must be purchased through an authorized dealer)

  3. I included lead time, designer, manufacturer and dimensions and details about the product that were important for a designer to know if the product will fit in the space they’re designing or is within budget.

  4. Additionally, I added the ability to download important design and spec files that were provided to us by the manufacturers so that designers could easily add the correct dimensions to their design files and their mockups.

  5. Toward the bottom of the page I added images from the Kontor platform that the product was featured in so that the user could see it in the context of a space and how other designers had used it.
